It is recommended you add this project to your Portfolio but it is not mandatory. Ask a peer if you need some assistance. Currently I have an extensive Blog and Twitter account that I use to communicate, share and connect with other professionals, but it is mostly used for my students and their families. As I glance through my archives it appears that my communication with my students is short, lacks explanation and focus. It would appear that my blog is an educational dumping ground. I can assure an outsider that the context to my posts and the explanations given in class clearly paints a complete picture. I need to work on the appearance of my webpage. There also appears to be one critical factor that is missing. The factor that allowed me to realize that the perception of my blog could have many interpretations– that missing factor is My Reflections.
George Couros eloquently wrote in his blog; “As I continue to work with groups, I focus on the importance of reflection and how it is crucial to moving forward. The challenge I have received (as with many initiatives) is that there is no time. My response has been that reflection is part of your work. It is important that you make it part of your day, as it should be a part of your student’s day. We cannot just continue to dump information into our (and our student’s) brains without giving or making time to reflect. It is essential that there is creation and connection along with consumption.” As part a huge Photoshop project our school undertook this winter there was a metacongintion assignment built into the task in which the students reflected on their work and collaboration skills. Their responses were brilliant and opened my eyes to why they like to work in groups and how they benefit from it academically. One of goals for the next term, is to build in time for my student’s to reflect on their assignments. Sometimes it will be a short Tweet and other times a blog entry similar to this in their own portfolio’s. I will focus on modelling what good reflections look like and encourage my students to see meaning in what they do. Due Feb 2nd (next day 5)
