Sometimes when you look in the mirror you don’t always like what you see, one may tend to dwell on negative or through purposeful omission disregard the obvious and be overly optimistic. No matter how honest your reflection is the mere act of engaging on your past behaviour and analyzing the cause and effects of your actions will defiantly help you see where you will be going. When we teach, we often plan to build the scaffold of learning, picking what we believe will be the key concepts to layer their knowledge and skills. We look forward….I am guilty of looking way too far ahead often, proud that my plans for the next month are in place. Celebrating the fact that we are embracing technology usually reserved for secondary schools courses, that my pedagogy is ideal. Leading the parade is fun when you are on a learning journey.
What is not in place during my journey is my reflection on the work accomplished and taking the time to ascertain what could have improved, what we ought to do.. What is also missing from my program is creating measurables so I don’t need to rely on anecdotal evidence. I am not sure how I can do this in a reasonable time frame but I know it would beneficial. As many schools in Peel are setting up unique learning spaces in elementary schools (i.e., Technasiums, learning commons, creative commons, maker spaces, media centres, studios…) I have been often asked to share my experiences on Edenwood’s pilot program ‘The Technasium’. One of the first questions an administer will ask me, “is it successful”? And then the dreaded “ how do you know it is successful”. We have no data to back up our successes. There are many way to measure the success we have had but we have not put those variables into place or recorded the successes that we have had. That needs to change and the students can help me. They are often more objective than adults are. Sometimes just writing a small reflection (last paragraph) and recording your thoughts brings a million new ideas. It is actually therapeutic. I will do my best to build reflection and metacognition components into my students’ tasks and my mine. Perhaps you will as well?
