I will ask some students to open my OneNote and copy a checklist for the Learning Goals and Success Criteria. There is also a checklist for IEP students and those who use Assistive Technology. EVERYONE!! Feel free to click on the link Copy/Paste the Checklist into a new section of your OneNote called Learning Goals and Success Criteria. Assistive Technology is “Necessary for some, good for all”. As my students work through their Key Concepts of Media Literacy inquiry it has become more apparent that students need to utilize tools to help them communicate their ideas. We are working on a collaborative inquiry that requires the students to collaborate on a OneNote Document in real time with up to six members working simultaneously from different devices. Students are posing questions within the frame work of the Key Concepts of Media Literacy and answering their own or each others questions. Some students are finding this text heavy task complicated. To ease the confusion tools have been made available to all students and utilized by some.
1. How to do it! The first key that has been given to the students is Navigation Awareness! The knowledge of how the basic organization of folders/files and where to find what they are looking for. 2. What to do! YouTube video tutorials on how to use OneNote, posted Learning Goals and success criteria, how to ask for help quickly, Q-Chart, tagging information that they have been working on. 3. How are you doing? Group members who are encouraged to share thoughts and ideas verbally as well in writing. They are rewarded for providing feedback to each other. Student can seek assistance with group members via instant messaging if the feel more comfortable doing so. 4. Access to Assistive technology such as microphones, WordQ, Dragon Dictate help elevate typing and increase writing output. All student will be required to try these assistive technology programs to discover for themselves the potential benefits. A checklist will be provided to some students to remind them of the assistive technology that should be used on a daily basis. By asking all students to use these tools as they see fit, lessens the stigma is created for those that need to rely on using assistive technology on a regular basis. 4. The media have special interests (commercial, ideological, political) Most media is created for profit. Advertising is generally the biggest source of revenue. Commercials are the most obvious means of generating revenue, although advertising messages take many forms, including product placement, (e.g., paying to have a product prominently displaying in programs or movies), sponsorships, prizes, pop-up ads, and surveys on the Internet, celebrity endorsements or naming a stadium or theatre. Some media are created for specific ideological or political purposes, When analyzing a media text, consider: Who created this and why? Who benefits if the message is accepted? Who may be disadvantaged?
